The entire point of “salt & light” is to be a positive, beautiful, force for good (kalos) in the world. Your good deeds must not only be good in quality, but Jesus is teaching us that they are best when unexpected, captivating and provoke curiosity. He’s also pointedly teaching that a Christian who doesn’t engage in the functions of salt and light is a contradiction in terms.
